Our Story

  • We're here to support Massage Therapy as it expands further into mainstream health care
  • We're deeply committed to creating opportunities for Canadian artisans and suppliers to share their work and products
  • As a local business, we stay true to our roots while expanding our national and international reach
  • We want to get to know you and make our relationships with our customers even better, one therapist at a time

All of this can't be done without teamwork, and the Team at MTSO is headed by owner Joe Clare, Manager Carol Paulson, Manager Vera Schnekenburger, and in-store staff member and aromatherapy expert, Marie Wilkinson.

This is our team, the people you talk to when you call, the people who pack and ship out your orders, the people who listen to your feedback and help you find what you are looking for.

Remember, we are Real People in a Real Store, and we love to hear from you!

    How We Began

Back in the mid-90s two therapists saw the need for a quality massage therapy supply store in Alberta. So they pooled their skills and resources and founded Edmonton's Massage Therapy Supply Outlet.

The store was first in the area to provide large-scale supplies like massage tables, massage chairs, table packages and accessories. They soon created one of the foremost massage supply companies in the country, all from a solid base: their own experience as massage therapists, and feedback from their customers.

After connecting with all the major brands for their oils, lotions and creams, they also shared their love of massage education with resources for students and professionals. Books, charts, skeleton models, music and videos were added to the inventory.

An ongoing relationship with local suppliers began soon after. The Edmonton artisans who create Prairie Tables and the most popular massage linens in Canada have been supported by the Massage Therapy Supply Outlet for nearly 20 years.

    The Business Grows

We are proud to say that WWW.MTSO.AB.CA was one of the very first online massage therapy supply stores in the country! Successful increasing online sales meant that the original store soon outgrew its location, needing more lots more space for more inventory.

The Massage Therapy Supply Outlet moved to our present location in Edmonton's Strathearn neighbourhood, and the business has just kept on growing.

    Owner, Joe Clare

Joe Clare, Owner and CEO of Massage Therapy Supply OutletLocal businessman Joe Clare was the owner of the building at 9206-95 Avenue when he heard that the founders of the Massage Therapy Supply Outlet were considering retirement. He stepped up and took on the company in January of 2012.

"I've always been interested in massage therapy, and when I was younger I considered becoming a massage therapist," Joe said. Though his life took him on another road, now as owner and CEO of MTSO he's come full circle and has met up with that earlier dream!

    Ethics and Whole Sources

Joe's personal initiatives for the store all circle around the ideas of local, sustainable, natural, organic, whole products that are ethically sourced and produced. Wherever possible he encourages recycling, upcycling and repurposing. He supports community initiatives, including family businesses and women's initiatives, whether local or international.

     Art and Community

Free Rain, Mural on wall at Massage Therapy Supply OutletActive for many years in both art and community, MTSO owner, Joe Clare had commissioned art for the exterior of the building well before he acquired the store.  The landmark mural Free Rain, by artist James K-M, graces one wall. See Strathearn Mural site for more info.

Revisioning and Auricle by sculptor Debora Alanna are featured on the other wall and grounds. For years Joe has planted a garden at the side and back of the building.

Joe set up a picnic table by the garden for local neighbours to stop by and chat.  And located just outside the store is a Little Free Library, with books free for the taking. Joe has also built a Francophone Little Free Library that is located just a block down, across the street, featuring books in French.   Each year on Remembrance Day, the community places poppies on the Remembrance Tree by the picnic table.
